Biography

Orville Richard Burrell (born October 22, 1968), better known by his stage name Shaggy, is a Jamaican-American reggae rapper, singer, and songwriter who scored hits with the songs “It Wasn’t Me”, “Boombastic”, “In The Summertime”, “Oh Carolina”, and “Angel”. He has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, winning twice for Best Reggae Album with Boombastic in 1996 and 44/876 with Sting in 2019, and has won the Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist in 2002.

In 2007, he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Distinction with the rank of Commander. In 2022, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University.

‘Ruff Entry Crew’ Member. He attended Erasmus Hall High, Brooklyn New York. Won a scholorship to Pratt Institue – Art & Design. 4 years U.S. Marines – served in Desert Storm.
Former Marine and veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
In 2001 he had two hit singles It Wasn’t Me featuring Ricardo “RikRok” Ducent and Angel featuring Rayvon. All three songs peaked at number one on the U.K., U.S., and Australian billboard charts.
Said in an interview that “Boombastic” was a made-up word. “Bombastic” is a real word.
Not to be confused with a member of the Mystery Machine gang from Scooby Doo.
Recorded an album titled “44/876” with Sting, so named because the numbers refer to the telephone prefixes of both the UK and Jamaica. [2018]
